44-year-old Ms. T.S Luthuli is the most praised woman for the good work she has been

doing in the community and helping those who are homeless. She does not work alone

but with the department of health.

Ms. Luthuli was born in a rural area in Eshowe called Enkanini, she later moved to

Ezindophi at the age of 17 with her family. In 1999, she worked at a Pep store as a

cashier and decided to do what she wanted as a young child, being a social worker and

helping people in the community.

Ms. Luthuli has been helping the community of Ezindophi and KwaSqwanjana area,

ward 12 and 13 for 5 years now. She started off as a social worker and was promoted to

As a CHW they go from house to house and do surveys. They provide food and clothes

to those in need. They help those who are sick and in need of emergency help from the

hospital and are attended to fast without being put on waiting lists and having to stand in

long queues.

She comes from a religious family, her father Mr. S. Ngema is a Pastor at ZCC church.

They attend church every Sunday. “Growing up I was told that if we do not praise the

lord, who else will help us when we are in need of help,” said Ms. Luthuli.

She quoted her favorite scripture from the bible that she was taught when growing up,

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him

should not perish but have eternal life,” which is John 3 verse16.

Ms. Luthuli loves her children and enjoys her work. You could tell from the way she

speaks about them.

They sometimes work in pairs, if it is a simple case they work individually. Their aim is

to help the people with social and interpersonal difficulties, promoting human rights and

wellbeing. “My work as a community health worker is to protect children and help those

in need of being assisted. I do informal counseling, health screening, and referral." said Ms. Luthuli.
